Speakers
The 2010 Professor’s Institute offered two days for
professors in marketing, communications and information
services to meet with direct/interactive marketers and
experts to learn about the latest technology and practices
in the field. This year’s program The Decade of Change
featured speakers on social media, industry best practices,
business to business marketing, database and analytics, the
Census Bureau and future career opportunities. Professors
were able to take back to the classroom case studies and
examples of real-life marketing
campaigns.

Michael Fountain is a Digital
Consultant with JWT INSIDE. In that role, he oversees
interactive strategy and development on a wide variety of
projects for clients across the country. Over the last two
years, he has been responsible for developing and
presenting JWT INSIDE's perspective on social media, and
social media strategy for a variety of public and private
sector clients. Prior to JWT INSIDE, Michael spent 12 years
working in marketing communications in both advertising
agency and client settings. His professional experience
includes: direct marketing, brand development and
research.

Beverly Tomb is a Global Demand
Programs lead at IBM, with responsibility for the joint
marketing program supporting the IBM and SAP alliance.
Prior to working with alliances, Beverly managed a team
that handled the direct marketing and lead management for
IBM’s e-business marketing campaign. In 1996, she was the
first woman to become a Certified Direct Marketing
professional after IBM created that internal certification.
Beverly gained “intrapreneurial” experience working on the
team that came out with the original IBM Personal Computer
in Boca Raton, FL, and she started her career in the
Washington, DC area as an IBM Systems Engineer after
graduating as an American Studies major from Smith College
in its Centennial Class.

Ellen
Cobb Church, Partner, President and CEO, Craver, Mathews,
Smith
Ellen was
appointed President and CEO in November 2006 and purchased
the company from Roger Craver with her partners in July
2008. She oversees all agency operations and ensures that
CMS exceeds all client expectations of fundraising
strategies, client service, and innovation. As the
company’s leader, Ellen is also a rich source of strategic
knowledge, including industry trends, and the domestic and
foreign affairs that drive our clients’ programmatic work.
Through her progression from Account Executive to President
and CEO, Ellen has directed the efforts of account teams in
their design and execution of the creative and strategic
plans for some of CMS’s most complex programs, local
organizations, and start-ups, working with both charitable
and advocacy organizations.
Ellen was named a Top Woman in Fundraising by Fundraising
Success Magazine in 2006. She is a member of the Direct
Marketing Fundraisers Association (DMFA), the Direct
Marketing Association (DMA), the Direct Marketing
Association of Washington (DMAW), the DMAW Education
Foundation Leadership Circle, the DMAWNF Ethics Committee,

Peter
Pasai, Executive Vice President, emotive, llc (New
Media)After
graduating from Dartmouth College in 1990, Peter began his
career in direct response as a copywriter at Viguerie &
Associates, working for a number of political advocacy and
charitable clients. He later served as Assistant Political
Team Vice President at V&A's successor company,
American Target Advertising. In 1995, Peter left ATA to
become Marketing Manager of Trout Unlimited, where he
oversaw all acquisition, renewal, and fundraising programs
and developed several new cooperative and cause-related
marketing programs both within and outside the fly fishing
industry. Peter joined The Lukens Company as Creative
Director in July 1998 and later served as TLC’s Senior
Advisor and Vice President of Business Development before
joining emotive. He is an active member of the Direct
Marketing Association of Washington (DMAW) and a recipient
of DMAW's MAXI award in recognition of outstanding

Richard
(Rick) P. Whelan, President, Marketing General Inc.

Rick is
President of Marketing General, Inc., (MGI) a diversified
marketing solutions agency. Founded in 1978, MGI is one of
the largest direct response agencies in North America
specializing in not-for-profit organizations. With 31 years
of experience in marketing and advertising, Rick has been
an account manager for a full-service graphics art studio
and production house.
He has earned his Certified Direct Marketer designation
(CDM), is a current Board Member of DMAW/EF and recently
received the DMAW’s Award for Distinguished Achievement in
Direct Marketing. Rick is a past Board Chair of the DMAW
and a former Chair of the ASAE Membership Section. He sits
on the ASAE Vendor Partner Committee. He has earned his BS

She has developed several CRM products while working with
major data compilers and credit bureaus. As a client using

fundraising clients. In business, and as a speaker and
direct marketing educator, Peg brings her clients and

Carrie
joined Quad/Graphics in the Corporate Training Program in
August 1995. She worked within the program for two years
completing production and administrative rotations while
learning all facets of the business. She was promoted to
Corporate Sales in 1999. Carrie has served as a QuadDirect
sales manager and is responsible for servicing existing
accounts, expanding those accounts and the growth of new
sales by means of business development within the DC,

Jeff
Kulick, Instructor, George Mason University: Professor’s
Open Space facilitator
Jeff
currently teaches at George Mason University’s School of
Management in marketing. From 2001 to 2004, he was the
Executive Director of National School Transportation
Association. For 4 years, he was a consultant on marketing,
strategic planning, research, organization development and
training and change management. Jeff has also been a Vice
President at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. He has a

Nesler, DM Educational Foundation: What’s New at
DMEF
Jeff has
just recently been named the Senior Program and Web Manager
at the DMEF, where he is responsible for day-to-day online
operations. For the last ten years, he has developed
marketed and supervised logistics for DMEF programs for
students and professors. Previously, he marketed and
conducted DMEF’s Collegiate ECHO challenge program, online
Auction for Education, plus assisting in the selection
process of scholarship and fellowship recipients. He
started his career as a freelance journalist after
graduating from Syracuse University with a BS in Broadcast
Journalism.

Raul E. Cisneros is the chief
of the 2010 Census Publicity Office at the U.S. Census
Bureau. His office manages the development of the 2010
Census paid media campaign in 28 languages and provides
support for a $312 million communications contract for
advertising services, public relations activities,
partnerships, the Census in Schools programs and online
interaction. Prior to this position, Cisneros served as
chief of the 2010 Census Media Relations Branch in the
Public Information Office. He has extensive public
relations and leadership experience and has worked with
public and private sector stakeholders nationally and the
state and local levels. Before joining the Census Bureau,
Cisneros worked for the Small Business Administration from
2001 to 2008. He was director of communications, associate
administrator for field operations, deputy chief of staff
and acting district director for Puerto Rico/U.S. Virgin
Islands. Born and raised in the Republic of Panama,
Cisneros earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the
U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado where he graduated with
military distinction. In 2009, Hispanic Business magazine
listed Cisneros as one of the nation’s 100
influentials.

Xenia
“Senny” Boone, Esq. SVP, Corporate & Social
Responsibility, DMA: Ethics, Privacy and Social

As DMA’s Senior Vice President
for Corporate & Social Responsibility, Ms. Boone leads
the organization’s efforts in corporate compliance, social
responsibility and best practices application for the
direct marketing community. She oversees Board level
Committees on ethical guidelines, the policing of member
compliance, and recent green marketing best practices. She
is currently leading educational efforts on topics of
interest in corporate & social responsibility, and
works with both consumers and members on marketing
compliance issues and best practices with regards to
multi-channel marketing.
Boone also oversees the DMA’s Nonprofit Federation (DMANF)
of nearly 500 nonprofit organizations and fundraisers
before Congress, the media, state and federal regulatory
bodies. She has built the organization in terms of new
products and services for members and increased the market
space for nonprofit organizations.
Senny Boone holds a J.D. from Catholic University, Columbus
School of Law, Washington, DC, and was awarded a
certificate from the Communications Law Institute at
Catholic University for specialized program in
communications law (privacy, First Amendment, technology
issues). Ms. Boone also has a B.A. Journalism, Cum Laude,
from Temple University, Philadelphia, PA. Her affiliations

Jill
Martineau Cornish, Association TRENDS
Jill
Martineau Cornish, IOM, called one of the "Dazzling Dozen
in Washington DC's Association World" and one of the "Women
Players in the Association World" by The Washington
Business Journal, was co-founder with her father Frank
Martineau, CAE, APR, of Association TRENDS in 1973.
Following several years as a Martineau Corporation AMC
account executive, Cornish was hired as director of
communications and then CEO for nearly 8 years of the
National Association of Plastic Fabricators, a
Washington-based building products association that was
later absorbed by a similar trade group.
Named the first woman member of the Small Business
Legislative Council, Cornish then received a Reagan
Administration Schedule C appointment with the Small
Business Administration to create a plan to coordinate
interaction between associations and government programs.
She returned to TRENDS as publisher in 1982.
Now the Executive Editor of Association TRENDS, a division
of Columbia Books & Information Services, Cornish
oversees special projects and content in the publication,
and provides consulting, insight and communication services
to the association community. Cornish and her husband Jeff,
a management executive with the World Future Society, live
in Rockville MD and have three adult children. (That IOM
after her name stands for “Incredibly Outstanding Mom,” as
well as the fact that she is a graduate of the US Chamber’s
Institutes for Organization Management program.)

Greg
Munford, President, BMD
Gregory
Allen Munford began his career as a copywriter at
Marstellar Advertising in Chicago and went on to become
Senior Copywriter at Maxwell Sroge. In 1981, he moved to
Washington DC to work as a copywriter with both Stephen
Winchell & Associates and The Viguerie Company. Finally
in 1984, he went out on his own as a freelance copywriter
before starting BMD, a full-service direct marketing
agency. Greg has been recognized in Advertising Age’s Top
100 Advertisers, plus winning the ECHO, MAXI and DMAW’s
“Big Idea” awards.
After earning a Gold Record for a #1 hit record as a
professional musician, Greg attended and graduated from
University of Southern California and received his masters
at the University of Chicago.

Murphy, Partner, RedEngine Digital
Liz Murphy
is President of RedEngine Digital, an integrated online
marketing agency in McLean, VA providing fundraising and
marketing strategy to not-for-profits, associations and
businesses. Her clients include organizations such as the
American Diabetes Association, CARE, the Children’s Aid
Society, Union Privilege and others.
Ms. Murphy has more than 25 years experience in direct

Perell, American Red Cross, Manager, Direct Marketing,
Research and Analytics
John has
been with the American Red Cross, Direct Response
Fundraising Unit at National Headquarters, for eight years,
serving in many different positions. Currently he serves as
the manager over direct mail programs, donor research, data
management and analytics for both national priorities and
an expanding consolidated chapter program. He has been very
active in cross-functional projects focusing on
establishment of a consolidated donor base, integration of
fundraising across media, segmentation and collaborative
chapter benchmarking. Before joining the American Red Cross
he spent 3 years in nonprofit fundraising working for
Production Solutions, a direct marketing production agency.

Rick Powell
